About this Item
Established in 2007 by the dynamic husband-and-wife team, Chris and Andrea Mullineux have, in a very short space of time, established Mullineux as one of South Africa’s most celebrated producers. Their track record speaks for itself: Awarded Wine Enthusiast’s International Winemaker of the Year in 2016, Tim Atkin’s SA Winemakers of the Year in 2017 and Five times Platter's Winery of the Year (2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2023).
Grapes for the 2014 Schist Chenin come from two parcels of sustainably farmed Chenin Blanc planted in the stony Shale and Schist based soils of the Kasteelberg, aged 36 and 40 years old. These are the parcels of Chenin that gives the best expression of the Kasteelberg’s terroir – density and structure – but with a decent balance of acidity.

Critics Ratings
'From 2 Kasteelberg schist-grown vineyards, 2014 noticeably ripe with quickening mineral vein & citrus freshness. Streamlined, with real mouthfilling presence & intensity. All 3 chenins naturally fermented/year in old oak, this the most expressive & richest in youth.' - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2016 - 4.5*
'The 2014 Schist Chenin is more broody and introspective compared to the 2014 Quartz Chenin with hints of licorice and lanolin on the nose. The palate is very well balanced with a pleasing "fatness" on the mid-palate. This is more viscous compared to the other Chenin bottlings from Mullineux, with an almost Southern Rhône-like finish and a long spicy aftertaste. This is another outstanding Chenin Blanc from Mullineux - as you would expect.' - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Nov 2015)
'Schist tends to produce the biggest, densest Chenins chez Mullineux and that’s the case here with this broad, plump, textured white, showing flavours of banana and pear and a tropical fruit backdrop. A little more acidity would be welcome perhaps.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2015, 92/100
'Broad but enticing, with warmed peach, ginger and piecrust flavors forming the core, while notes of verbena and sweetened butter line the finish. Frankly toasty but shows good definition. Drink now through 2017.' - 100 cases made. James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Apr 2016)
