About this Item
Established in 2007 by the dynamic husband-and-wife team, Chris and Andrea Mullineux have, in a very short space of time, established Mullineux as one of South Africa’s most celebrated producers. Their track record speaks for itself: Awarded Wine Enthusiast’s International Winemaker of the Year in 2016, Tim Atkin’s SA Winemakers of the Year in 2017 and Five times Platter's Winery of the Year (2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2023).
Grapes for the 2013 Schist Syrah were sourced from a single parcel of sustainably farmed 18 year old vines planted in the stony Shale and Schist soils of Roundstone Farm on the Kasteelberg. This parcel of Syrah gives the best expression of the Kasteelberg’s terroir – density and structure.

Critics Ratings
'From 2 best schist-based Kasteelberg shiraz/syrah blocks, 2013 reveals alluring white pepper & perfumed nuance, supremely balanced & fresh; fruit purity, almost delicate, but with refined intensity & length. This & sibling identically vinified to highlight effect of terroir. Already tempting.'- Platter's SA Wine Guide 2016, 4.5*
'The Mullineux have been making wine with this fruit since 2004 - it used to go into one of the reds at Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards - and you can see why they rate it so highly. Floral, structured and pepper spicy, with a thrilling core of minerality, this Syrah is effortlessly complex and set for a long life in bottle. Beautifully focused. Drink: 2015-25' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2015, 96/100
'Still tightly coiled, this has a core of red currant, bitter cherry and raspberry notes waiting to unwind, with long, fine-grained tannins carrying the alder and black tea—infused finish. Shows ample buried minerality. Let this sit in the cellar for a bit. Similar to a Côte-Rôtie from the Côte Brune'. - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Apr 2016)
'The 2013 Schist Syrah does not quite possess the same delineation as the 2013 Iron Syrah on the nose, with touches of dark chocolate infusing the red berry fruit, later clove and Provençal herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannin. This has a bit more body than the 2013 Iron, with more sumptuousness, freshness and corpulence with smooth, slightly gamey red berry fruit, truffle and undergrowth. Once the aromatics, open this might be the pick of recent releases from Mullineux.' - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 94/100 (Nov 2015)
'Riebeeksrivier. Roundstone Vineyard. 2013 was a fresh, dry vintage so they had to pick quite early to avoid stress.Pale crimson. Heady sweet nose, a bit like Pinot – floral and sweet. Lighter than the 2011.' - Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Sep 2015)
