'This edition's preeminent red wine is from an organically farmed parcel outside Malmesbury, on iron soil, with corresponding ferrous/savoury nuance. Deeper hued and firmer structured than the Schist stablemate but with similar white pepper perfume. 'It’s always difficult to choose between the three soil-specific Syrahs at this brilliant winery, and this is only the second vintage of this wine, but it’s still a belter. 'The 2013 Iron Syrah has a roundness and softness on the nose that almost belies its complexity - red berry fruit, red peppercorns, rooibos and undergrowth scents that are very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, wonderfully savory and quite gamey, and beautifully balanced with impressive volume and sustain on the finish that you would have difficult distinguishing from a top Côte-Rôtie. 'This delivers a serious iron spike from the start, along with singed juniper and alder notes. The core of fruit is ample, featuring lots of bitter cherry, plum and blood orange, but this is held in check for now, with some serious grip still driving the finish.
