About this Item
Established in 2007 by the dynamic husband-and-wife team, Chris and Andrea Mullineux have, in a very short space of time, established Mullineux as one of South Africa’s most celebrated producers. Their track record speaks for itself: Awarded Wine Enthusiast’s International Winemaker of the Year in 2016, Tim Atkin’s SA Winemakers of the Year in 2017 and Five times Platter's Winery of the Year (2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2023).
The Iron Syrah forms part of three varietal Syrahs in the Terroir Specific range. Sourced from a single parcel of organically farmed dryland bushvines on iron-rich soils west of Malmesbury, the 2013 was Platter's Red Wine of the Year in 2016.

Critics Ratings
'This edition's preeminent red wine is from an organically farmed parcel outside Malmesbury, on iron soil, with corresponding ferrous/savoury nuance. Deeper hued and firmer structured than the Schist stablemate but with similar white pepper perfume. Complex, muscular but sleek and more Integrated and balanced than debut 2012.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2016, 5* (95/100)
'It’s always difficult to choose between the three soil-specific Syrahs at this brilliant winery, and this is only the second vintage of this wine, but it’s still a belter. The site is warm, but the 100% whole bunches bring freshness to the rich, sweet, dense, peppery, black-fruited flavours. Drink: 2016-25' - Tim Atkin SA Wine Report 2015, 95/100
'The 2013 Iron Syrah has a roundness and softness on the nose that almost belies its complexity - red berry fruit, red peppercorns, rooibos and undergrowth scents that are very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, wonderfully savory and quite gamey, and beautifully balanced with impressive volume and sustain on the finish that you would have difficult distinguishing from a top Côte-Rôtie. This is an excellent Syrah, my only reservation being that there is a touch of heat on the finish.'- Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Nov 2015)
'This delivers a serious iron spike from the start, along with singed juniper and alder notes. The core of fruit is ample, featuring lots of bitter cherry, plum and blood orange, but this is held in check for now, with some serious grip still driving the finish. Best from 2017 through 2022. 266 cases made. - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Apr 2016)
'Big and sweet and round. Racy and complete. Real structure.'- Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Sep 2015)
