About this Item
Meerlust Estate, owned by the Myburgh family, has been in the family for eight generations. Located 5km from False Bay, the property was given the name 'Meerlust' from the original owner, which means 'pleasure of the sea'. The Meerlust name is synonymous with tradition, elegance and longevity. In fact, it was their Cabernet Sauvignon, produced since 1975, that was the first to carry the Meerlust label.
The first wine produced by Giorgio Dalla Cia at Meerlust when the Bergkelder loaned Giorgio to Meerlust to supervise all the wine-making processes in the cellar during the 1978 season. After the successful 1975 which won young wine awards, the richer 1978 shows more Cabernet Sauvignon character and power. The 1978 Rubicon remains of the finest and longest-aging wines of the 1970s.

Light in colour. Sweet cigar, slight dusty note and earth. Iron notes, meaty savouriness with soft mature edge. Quite delicate and perfumed. Soft, elegant and easy to drink, it’s in decline. 3rd vintage Cabernet Sauvignon at Meerlust. Drink now. - Roland Peens (Feb 2021), 90/100.
Healthy, garnet colour, with slight brick red variation. Leather, prune and dried herbs. Some red fruit lurking in good nick. Palate has wonderful integrity. Bright line of acid, fine tannins. Medium finish. Drink soon.'- Higgo Jacobs (Feb 2021), 91/100
