De Toren Private Cellar, Meerlust Estate and Mullineux
About this Item
De Toren has been focused on developing and re-defining the Bordeaux concept into something uniquely South African since they acquired their first hectares in 1991. Specialising in luxurious & award-winning Bordeaux-style blends. The winery itself was nominated for best ‘New World Winery of the Year’ by Wine Enthusiast in 2011 and has established an iconic following. At De Toren the pursuit for perfection is evident in their grape selection and harvesting. They aim to ‘create an environment where vines produce flawless fruit and then guard these grapes as they are gently steered from vineyard, to cellar to bottle’.
The iconic Left Bank based blend from De Toren. Named for the ‘fusing’ together of Bordeaux’s five famous varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec). The Fusion V celebrated its maiden vintage in 1999 and was introduced to the international markets. Under the guidance of Albie Koch this Bordeaux left-bank inspired blend has accumulated an energised and praised following from wine aficionados both in South Africa and abroad (especially in the US).

'Wonderful combination of red and black fruit with prominent support from 50% new oak providing both softness and another layer of flavours including dark chocolate and kirsch. Delicious.' - Higgo Jacobs (Feb 2021), 94/100
‘Very sweet and primary and solid. Plums strawberry and sweetness. Little gooey, some tertiary notes with lots of pure fruit. In a great spot. Delicious. Savoury and spicy. Drink now to 2035’ - Roland Peens (Feb 2021)
‘(a Bordeaux blend based on 56% cabernet sauvignon): Full medium ruby. Sexy dark fruits, coffee and spices on the nose. Then lush, sweet and seamless, with glossy flavors of red and dark berries, truffle and spices. Wonderfully ripe, velvety wine with sweet tannins, superb balance and impressive length. A very classy, harmonious wine in a rather New World style.’ – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous.com (March 2011), 93/100
‘Glossy, acclaimed top-ranker. 5-variety Bdx red, usually cab-led, as in 08. As always, svelte, seamless & ageworthy; complex interplay of flavours, spice, blackcurrant, herbal notes, with trademark tailored tannins the perfect foil.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2011, 4.5*
