About this Item

2011 The Journeyman
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Boekenhoutskloof, located in the Franschhoek valley, was established in 1776 and gets its name 'Boekenhout' from an indigenous Beech tree. Boekenhoutskloof, managed by Marc Kent, describes themself as a Syrah specialist. Their efforts in conservation can be seen through initiatives they have taken-on in their farm and surrounding areas. They are also a founding member of the Franschhoek Mountain Conservancy.

  • Arguably one of SA’s rarest wines, The Journeyman is the pinnacle of Marc Kent’s winemaking vision and one of SA’s true cult wines. Made only in exceptional vintages, the 2005 was the first maiden release and sold out in a flash.
  • Usually Cabernet Franc led, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It was named after Marc Kent’s cockney grandfather, who was described as ‘The Journeyman’ on his father’s birth certificate, this wine is a personal expression that celebrates the unique and the individual.
  • ‘Over time, Boekenhoutskloof has established that Cabernet Franc is the cultivar best suited to the terroir of our property in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley, with three top-performing blocks having been planted in 1994 and 1995. The remainder of the grapes comes from a 23-year old Merlot block, also on Boekenhoutskloof’. - Winemaker

Critics Ratings

‘Dark chocolate, terracotta, dirt road, black fruit. Just a touch of oak spice is evident, but entirely integrated with the wine now. Wonderful elegance to the palate, still holding on to lots of its primary dark fruit, and now developing complexity and seamless drinkability with age. This will be very well suited to roast lamb with rosemary’. – Higgo Jacobs 2020, 95/100

‘The 2011 The Journeyman is a blend of 67% Cabernet Franc and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, the fruit sourced from the estate, fully destemmed then fermented in oak barriques, finally aged for 26 months in oak barriques. The nose is very refined and poised with blackberry, briar notes, allspice and touches of cedar and bell pepper – capturing the essence of Cabernet Franc with panache. The palate is medium-bodied, very well-balanced with crisp acidity. Fine symmetry here, very elegant with touches of dark chocolate smoothing out the refined finish. Just three barrels produced and not a single bottle sold – they are given away by Mark Kent or dropped into mixed cases.’ – Neal Martin, Robertparker.com, 94/100 (2014)
