About this Item
Boekenhoutskloof, located in the Franschhoek valley, was established in 1776 and gets its name 'Boekenhout' from an indigenous Beech tree. Boekenhoutskloof, managed by Marc Kent, describes themself as a Syrah specialist. Their efforts in conservation can be seen through initiatives they have taken-on in their farm and surrounding areas. They are also a founding member of the Franschhoek Mountain Conservancy.
- Arguably one of SA’s rarest wines, The Journeyman is the pinnacle of Marc Kent’s winemaking vision and one of SA’s true cult wines. Made only in exceptional vintages, the 2005 was the maiden commercial release and sold out in a flash.
- Usually Cabernet Franc led, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It was named after Marc Kent’s cockney grandfather, who was described as ‘The Journeyman’ on his father’s birth certificate, this wine is a personal expression that celebrates the unique and the individual.
- ‘Over time, Boekenhoutskloof has established that Cabernet Franc is the cultivar best suited to the terroir of our property in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley, with three top-performing blocks having been planted in 1994 and 1995. The remainder of the grapes comes from a 23-year old Merlot block, also on Boekenhoutskloof’. - Winemaker

Critics Ratings
2007 - ‘Juicy red and bright fruited. The palate is savoury and clean; layered with a long salty end. There is a deeply woven saline and seashell /oyster complexity that is interwoven with beautiful fruit pristine fruit. Concentrated on the palate, the freshness and lively acidity adds to the impressive depth of fruit while the palate has a great finish. In short a compelling wine.’ – James Pietersen 2020, 95/100
'Lovely glowing crimson with some evolution – perfumed and delicate. Health juice. Long and beguiling.' - Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (Nov 2009)
'Gorgeous coffee and tobacco aromas lead the way for a rich, but very silky, combination of fig, mulled currant, sweet tapenade and tar notes. The long finish lets a hot stone note play out, with the tobacco hint taking an encore. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon' - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Apr 2010)
2008 - 'On the bouquet cherries and raspberries, graphite and minerality. On the palate graphite as well, very ripe but pleasant fruits, good acidity, some sweetness and supple, friendly tannin. Good length. Very pleasurable wine.
2009 - ‘The nose very left bank Bordeaux. Classic notes of old leather, shoe polish, black liquorice with the brooding and dense fruit core leading to a massive thick charcoal coated tannin structure of huge power and long full impact. Still powerful this is a wine of immense power and intensity.’ – James Pietersen, 94/100
