About this Item
Sister property of renowned Hamilton Russell Vineyards, neighbouring it to the east, and possessing different clay-rich and shale-derived stony soils, inspiring Anthony Hamilton Russell to plant solely to Pinotage on the red front, when he founded the estate back in 1996.
From the maiden release in 2001, this benchmark wine has redefined South Africa’s own red grape variety, Pinotage, with its classic, refined styling and unique complex character. This is a wine unlike anything else, intense, rich and savoury with a beautiful underlying minerality.

Critics Ratings
'The 2008 Hemel en Aarde Valley came from the coolest vintage in 14 years and therefore unsurprisingly it has low alcohol at 13.3 degrees. It is 67% Pinotage and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon – 14 months in French oak of which half was new. There is an herbaceous aspect on the nose that is immediately apparent – dark berry fruit, touches of stewed black tea and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with a mint-fresh entry. This is well-balanced and crisp, the finish very cool and linear and perhaps without the persistence of a more benevolent growing season.' - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Oct 2014)
'Pinotage (67%) with cab, introverted 2008 unfurls in glass to reveal thrillingly restrained cassis & old leather tones; leafy dryness, fine texture & moderate alcohol only add to the appeal. Warrants further cellaring. 2007 (4 stars) had equal dabs (9%) shiraz & cab; previous 100% pinotage.' - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2014, 4.5*
