About this Item
Botanica, located on Protea Heights farm, was founded in 2009 by owner and winemaker, Ginny Povall. Since Protea Heights farm was the first in South Africa to cultivate indigenous protea flowers commercially, it is fitting that the wine labels are floral themed. Just under half of the 21.6 hectares are planted with indeginous flowers, and since 2014 Botanica has been practising organic farming in their 5-hectare vineyards.
Maiden vintage Botanica Chenin Blanc 2009, made from old vines near Citrusdal, was one of only two Chenin Blancs to earn five stars in Platter’s 2011 wine guide.
Each of the labels depicts a botanical collage created by British artist Mary Delany. These remarkable works of art were hand crafted in the late 1700s using hundreds of tiny pieces of cut paper.

Critics Ratings
'Subtly sublime 2009 from ±50 yr old dry-farmed bushvine vyd near Clanwilliam. Delicate, gently sweet floral & honeyed tones, minerals, partial brl ferm in gd support. Beautiful packaging, bespeaking attention to detail.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2011, 5*
‘The 2011 Botanica Chenin Blanc spends twelve months on its lees. It has a light resinous nose with hints of passion fruit and dried pineapple that displays fine focus. With aeration, there is a mote of candied orange peel. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity and a light, green apple and orange zest finish. This is fine fresh, almost effervescent Chenin Blanc. Drink now’ – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 91/100 (Dec 2012)
‘This brilliant release now comes from two sources on Citrusdal Mountain (one picked early, the other late) and is consistently one of the best of the top Cape Chenins. Notes of creamy lees, understated oak, and pear and apple spice are underpinned by an oyster shell frisson that wouldn’t look out of place in Vouvray. Drink: 2016-25.’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2013, 95/100
