About this Item

2014 Reserve Chenin Blanc
4 (1 x 4) 750ml

DeMorgenzon first burst onto the scene in 2005 with this, their debut Chenin Blanc earning a Platter’s 5*, from low-yielding vines planted in 1972. Owned by the Wendy and Hylton Applebaum, the picturesque farm with 360° aspect and high views over False bay and Table mountain is perched on top of Stellenbosch kloof.

DeMorgenzon’s Chenin Blanc comes from low-yielding vines planted in 1972, which were originally planted as bush vines but recently lifted onto trellises. The vines are planted in decomposed granite soils, at altitudes of 250 to 300 meters above sea level. Close proximity to False Bay ensures cooling breezes in the warm summer months.

Critics Ratings

‘DeMorgenzon’s Chenin Blancs are consistently among the best in the Cape - maybe it’s the classical music that’s played to them in the vineyards? Rich, floral and slightly tropical, but with no botrtyis this time. Creamy, minerally and well structured with a complex, savoury finish. Drink: 2015-19’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2015, 94/100

‘Really bright crisp fruit. Crystalline.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17++/20 (Sep 2015)

‘There's a lovely vibrancy to the nose of this wine, as initial aromas of green melon and lime peel are laced with attractive herbal hits of fynbos and white flowers. The medium-weight palate offers a plush yet balanced feel, with ample acidity to counter the notes of toasted red apple, honeydew and honeycomb. Spicy wood tones dance on the lingering finish. It's delicious now, but should age well through 2021.’ - Lauren Buzzeo, Wine Enthusiast, 93/100 (Dec 2016)

‘Seriously styled 2014 from old bushvines, 10 months on lees prior to barrel selection. Real verve & personality, flaunting delicious layer upon complex layer of ripe apples, peaches & nuts. Richer, more generous style than new Special Cuvée bottling.’ - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2016, 4.5*

’Sexy subtle perfume of peach and dusty nutmeg. Then saline, tightly coiled and very concentrated, conveying a lovely sweetness but also terrific inner-mouth energy to the stone and soft citrus fruits. Finishes firmly phenolic but not at all dry. This wine fermented naturally in the barrel, and was then aged for eight months in one-third new French oak. This is the only vineyard the Appelbaums kept when they purchased the estate in 2004. "They were bush vines; we simply lifted their skirts," said Wendy Appelbaum.’ - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 91/100 (Apr 2015)
