Chenin & Pinotage
About this Item
Often described as the South African equivalent of a Grand Cru or First Growth, Kanonkop Estate is situated on the Simonsberg mountain slopes on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. Owned by the fourth generation Krige family,
The Black Label was introduced as a limited-edition bottling with the 2006 vintage, cementing the team’s confidence in South Africa’s own red variety. Black Label is made from one of the oldest Pinotage vineyards in South Africa, one planted in 1953 on a site that has over the years proved to produce fruit of specific excellence and deemed special enough to be bottled under an own label.

'This shows a broader lactic creamy savoury black fruited nose with notes of black cherry, raisined black blueberries, graphite and sappy cedar oak spice. There is wonderful precision and purity, opulence and generosity of black and blue berry fruit intensity that rolls across the tongue and around the mouth with an effortless balance. A very compact and seamlessly constructed wine with all the components of fruit, acid and tannin creating a splendid synergy. Really quite impressive.’ - Greg Sherwood MW, 96/100 (Nov 2022)
‘Peppery spices, warm concrete, sweet tilled earth and dried red berry aromas lead to a smooth, round palate lifted by a rich vein of balsamic-macerated strawberries. There's a roasted coffee-like element to the oak and the tannins are a touch drying, but the delicate red cherry-berry fruit flavours will keep this drinking well for several years yet.’ - Tina Gellie, Decanter, 92/100 (May 2022)
'Sweet, pure, ripe, elegant blackberry and blackcurrant fruit nose. The palate is fine, ripe, smooth and well defined with elegant cherry and berry fruit. Supple and stylish with good structure; fine but firm tannins. Great concentration and structure, but elegance too.' - Jamie Goode, Wineanorak.com, 96/100
‘The 2010 Pinotage Black Label comes from a season that was affected by 150km/h winds in November that damaged the untrellised vines. It has a sensual bouquet with dark cherries, blueberry, liquorice and crushed violets, sophisticated and harmonious. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiseled tannins, demonstrating more tension than the 2007 with more mineralité towards the finish. It is less spicy and rustic than preceding vintages yet with longer persistence. Superb.’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 93/100 (May 2022)
