About this Item
Patatsfontein is a winemaking venture formed by Reenen Borman of Boschkloof, fund manager Henk Kotze and Fritz Schoon – ‘Master’ baker of Schoon De Companje in Stellenbosch. Reenen's accomplished hand and ever-increasing skills are especially impressive considering his young age. He's possibly our finest new-generation winemaker at present and his latest releases are just epic! Their 2014 Steen was Tim Atkin's White Wine Discovery of the Year and changed the status quo of what can be achieved in a region essentially known for sweet Muscadel.
This unique wine is made from an old single vineyard situated 600m above sea level in the Montagu mountains planted on Karoo slate and shale. Today it is one of South Africa’s greatest Chenin Blancs.

Critics Ratings
'Single-vineyard chenin from Montagu, Old-World styling of 2015 echoes maiden 2014 (4.5 stars, 93 pts), shows similar restraint. There’s lemon, tantalising stonefruit, almonds, earthy notes, all interwoven into a fine-boned beauty. Chenin as an aristocrat.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2017, 5*
'A delicious follow up to the maiden 2014, which was my discovery of the year in last year’s report, this comes from isolated Montagu and is grown at over 500 metres. More focused than the 2014, it’s a very complex, vigorous Chenin, unfurling flavours of clove and pepper spice, subtle oak, stony minerality, baking spices and green apple. Drink: 2016-20' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2016, 95/100
'The 2015 is a step-up from the stellar 2014, showing an unbelievable array of dried fruits, minerality, savoury complexity and phenomenal length. Produced naturally and raised in older oak, it is wonderfully rich and yet deftly poised. This old vine Chenin Blanc has fast become one of South Africa’s finest.' - Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100
