About this Item

2010 - 2012 White
3 (1 x 3) 750ml

Sequillo is Latin for ‘an arid dry place of great purity’, a venture started by Eben Sadie at his Swartland cellar. Aiming to showcase Swartland’s terroir, he utilised Mediterranean and Rhône varietals best suited to the conditions to create a white and red blend. Quoted by Eben to be ‘some of my best releases to date’, this was the first time the varieties were co-fermented, resulting in greater integration, balance and ultimately a better wine.

The lot consists of 1 bottle each Sequillo White 2010 - 2012.

Sequillo wines – a label started in 2005 that offers pure expressions of the Swartland. For the first time the varieties were co-fermented, resulting in greater integration, balance and ultimately better wines. Soulful, naturally-styled and with ample freshness,

Critics Ratings

2010:
‘The 2010 White Blend is a Chenin Blanc-based blend complemented by Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne raised for one year in old 225-liter Burgundy barrels with minimal use of sulphur. The nose is well defined and very natural with scents of honeycomb, wax resin and dried fruits. The palate is well balanced with good acidity, and vibrant flavours of walnut and bitter lemon leading to a very focused, fresh finish. Drink now-2017.’
– Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Aug 2011)

2011:
‘Tangy and exciting. Real tang and race. Has been refined – less fat than it was. Long.’ - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Jun 2013)

‘A blend of Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Pallamino, Viognier, Clairette, Semillon Blanc, Semillon Gris and the kitchen sink, aged in large concrete vessels and aged with no new wood on the lees for 12 months, the 2011 Sequillo White Blend It has a tightly wound bouquet with melted candle wax, light honeysuckle, jasmine and orange blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp, nutty, lemongrass-tinged entry. It is beautifully balanced with perfect acidity, the increased proportion of Clairette and Pallamino lending a little more race and edginess. It leads to a complex, quite potent finish. Outstanding. Drink now-2020.’ - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Dec 2012)

2012:
‘Seven varieties are used in this well-priced Swartland blend from Eben Sadie and they work very well together. Wax, pear toast and some honeydew melon here, with floral aromas and a taut, minerally backbone. Drink: 2013-17’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2013, 92/100

‘The 2012 Sequillo White is the usual gallimaufry of white varieties chosen by Eben Sadie. It has an elegant bouquet that demands some coaxing from the glass: melted candle wax, damp straw and a touch of dried pineapple and smoke emerging with time. The palate is well-balanced with a crisp, apricot and yellow plum entry. There is superb tension here and the finish is very harmonious and long in the mouth. This is a delicious white Swartland wine. Drink now-2018.’ - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Oct 2013)
