About this Item
Spioenkop was established in 1998 and is located on a hill in Elgin deemed similar to the one in KwaZulu Natal where the battle of Spioenkop was fought during the Anglo Boer, with the 1900 range named after the year the battle took place. The estate is co-owned by Belgian former Sommelier and ex engineer, Koen Roose, fulfilling the roles of Viticulturist, Winemaker and General Manager. Known to do things differently, Koen is championing unique viticultural practices and varietals in Elgin. Koen traditionally exports most of his wines to his native Belgium. Spioenkop's recent Chenin Blanc’s have been world class.

Critics Ratings
‘"I'm very lazy," jokes Koen Roose, "I just bottle what the terroir gives me." This is a bigger, bolder Chenin than his Sarah Raal bottling, sourced from clay and shale soils. Thicker skins, 20% new oak and greater concentration make this rich, leesy, structured wine stand out. Elgin's best expression of the grape. 2020-28’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 95/100
‘Chenin off ferricrete soil. 2018 pure, complex aromas & flavours, with a subtle earthy nuttiness. Crisp & refined, unshowy but intense, with fine vein of citric acidity. Lightly oaked & on lees for added breadth. Drier & less rich than notably impressive 2017 (5 stars, 95 pts).’ - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2020, 4.5* (93/100)
‘Bright apple, honey, dried herbs and some stony, nutty complexity. Crisp, linear and chalky textured, with a saline tang. Good length.’ - Tim Jackson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Dec 2019)
