About this Item

2016 El Bandito Skin Contact Chenin Blanc
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

The wines of Testalonga defy convention in a lot of ways. Craig and Carla Hawkins have never been accused of being “followers” and their wines represent the avant-garde of South African wine.

The TESTALONGA wines in some ways have come a long way since the first vintage, and in other ways they remain steadfastly true to the principles upon which the project was established 12 years ago. In our opinion they are the leaders in natural wine production in South Africa. Craig and Carla seek purity, precision and brightness in their wines and only work with vineyards that can produce high-quality grapes ensuring that there is minimal need for intervention in the cellar. A herbicide- and pesticide-free approach in the vineyard is essential to their goals. They work with cover crops rather than chemical fertilisers in the winter to ensure moisture retention and general soil health in the dry Swartland climate. Expressing vineyard is key, so all the wines are a single variety from a single site. In the cellar there is no yeast, enzymes or acid added. The whites are whole-bunch pressed and then fermented in either stainless steel, foudre or small oak.

Winemakers tasting note: 'The 2016 Skin contact is our proudest wine, being the first wine we bottled and made in 2008. The wine has come a long way and each year provides us with new flavours. We have toned down on the extraction and have now stopped experimenting as much as we used to. We have found our sweet spot that we enjoy for Skin Macerated whites and enjoy the balance we get from these flavours. This was the shortest skin contact that we have ever given to this wine and we really feel the wine is now developing into something that is entirely on its own.'

Critics Ratings

'From a 1972 Chenin Blanc vineyard. Period on skins reduced to 10 days due to the nature of the vintage. An enticing nose of flowers before citrus and yellow peach before base notes of earth and spice. Intensely flavoured but still refreshing and more-ish. Lovely balance and great length. Some grip in the best sense.' - Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100 (Nov 2016)
