About this Item
In its 160 years of history, Pol Roger has carved out one of the strongest reputations in the select circle of the leading Champagne brands. Pol Roger was born on December 24, 1831, the son of a lawyer, he started his own champagne house in 1849, with the first growths released in 1853. Based around the town of Epernay, the house releases non-vintage cuvées every year, as well as three vintage wines, and the house’s prestige label – the Vintage Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill (as Churchill had a legendary thirst for Champagne, especially Pol Roger). For five generations, the descendants have been equally demanding, remaining loyal to the strategy initiated from the very beginning by the firm's founder. Today, the house is still owned and run by the family.

Critics Ratings
‘Very pale, bright color. Knockout nose of lemon, orange blossom, chalk, minerals and flowers offers great lift; pristine and vibrant. Wonderfully ripe, pure and perfumed in the mouth, with penetrating, sappy acidity contributing to the impression of structure and cut. Very intense lemon, lime, mineral and floral flavors complicated by an exotic suggestion of guava. A classic 1996 in its combination of full ripeness and bracing acidity. Palate-staining, very ripe aftertaste. This will be even better for a few years of additional bottle aging.’ - Stephan Tanzer, Vinous, 94+/100 (Nov 2003)
‘Tight and neat. Much more fruit than the 1998. Dense and very, very solid. Masses of acidity. Quite long and with great length.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18.5/20 (Nov 2009)
‘An intensely complex wine which brings together 18 of the greatest vineyards in Champagne. This vintage combines richness with a relatively high level of acidity. This means it has already a fine balance, with a touch of toast, great power and concentration and flavors of white currants and red fruits. The wine shouldn't be touched until 2005 and then will age for many years.’ - Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, 94/100 (Dec 2004)
