About this Item
Egly-Ouriet produces terroir-expressive Champagne primarily from the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay, as well as from Bouzy, Verzenay and Vrigny. Owner and winemaker Francis Egly took over from his father in 1982, after which he immediately converted the domaine to 100% estate bottling, and in the process became one of the original pioneers in the grower Champagne movement. The domaine comprises 12 hectares of organically-farmed old vine Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay—50 years old on average.
Biodynamic Farming
Farmed and made according to biodynamic practices, but not certified. Often accompanied with organic farming practices.
Biodynamic farming uses no synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Biodynamic farming works to achieve soil health through the use of compost, animal and green manures; diversified crop rotations; and incorporation of livestock. However, the two agricultural systems differ in that biodynamic farmers rely on eight specific preparations for the soil, crops and compost to enhance soil and plant quality, and to stimulate the composting process. The eight preparations, designated by their ingredients or by numbers 500 to 507, are made from cow manure; silica; the flowers of yarrow, chamomile, dandelion and valerian; oak bark; and the stinging nettle plant. A ninth prep, often referred to as 508, is made from horsetail and is used for fungal disease.
These bottles were disgorged in July 2016.

Critics Ratings
‘The NV Brut Les Vignes de Vrigny 1er Cru, Egly-Ouriet’s 100% Meunier, is bright, focused and quite expressive. Dried orchard fruit, hazelnut, dried flowers, mint and chamomile. Classy and resonant through to the finish, the Vignes de Vrigny is striking. All the elements are impeccably balanced. This release is 50% 2012, 30% 2011 and 20% 2010. Dosage is 2 grams per liter.’ - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 92/100 (Dec 2016)
‘Lush and creamy in texture, with flavors of white peach, pastry, espresso crème and saffron, enlivened by a firm frame of citrusy acidity. Well-knit and expressive, offering a clean-cut finish of fleur de sel and blanched almond. Disgorged July 2016. Drink now through 2022.’ - Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Nov 2017)
