About this Item
The Laibach farm, as we know it today, dates back to 1818 when it was originally called 'Good Success'. It was later divided into 3 farms, one of which was purchased by Friedrich Laibach in 1994 and became Laibach farm. Laibach is located in Simonsberg, and has been converted to organic farming since the start of the century. The winemaking approach is one of minimal intervention so to allow the Simonsberg-Stellenbosch site to produce the flavours in the vineyards. Laibach was purchased by neighbouring Kanonkop in January 2022, will in future be known as Ladybird Vineyards.
Organic Certification
Both farmed and made according to organic practices, certified by ECOCERT (mostly Europe) and other organisations.
Certified organically grown grapes - no use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. Use of certain cover crops, methods of soil care, and other specified vineyard care.
Wine made according to strict standards - use of approved, organic yeast, and no added sulfites or other specified additives. Does not imply that the wine is vegan (allows for specified fining agents (including egg whites) and enzymes). In certain regions this is extended to chaptalisation and acid addition.

Critics Ratings
2010 - '2010 raises the bar on 2009 (4 stars). Deceptively mild, this wolf in sheep’s garb grows in power in the mouth. Leashed restraint evident in its plum and berry ripeness. Earthy cocoa is cloaked in fine oak tannins. Seamlessly elegant.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2013, 4.5*
2011 - ‘Serious, broodingly elegant 2011 picks up where 2010 ended. Hedgerow fruit with cocoa and graphite below. Fine tannins from 12 months all-new oak and 14 months more in old vats. Sleek but taut, with a long rich tail.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2014, 4.5*
2012 - ‘Classically styled 2012 shows fine-textured elegance, with compact dark fruit in dry but supple chalky tannin structure; complementary oak (50% new) adds spice. Serious and sophisticated, with a pedigree for ageing.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2015, 4.5*
2013 - 'Meticulous fruit selection rewards with concentration, elegance and structure. 2013’s well-integrated oak (50% new) allows fragrant fruit to shine. Polished and youthful, many years of drinking pleasure ahead.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2016, 4.5* (91/100)
2014 - ‘Alluring perfumed red fruit and cedar on understated 2014, refined and balanced, with tannins well tailored, fine and dry. Very youthful but has fruit and charm to develop, will show true colours in a few years' time.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2017, 5* (97/100)
2015 - ‘Long skin contact, accounting for deep colour, concentration of 2015. Cassis, maraschino cherries, 60% new barrels giving spice flavouring, firm ageing foundation. Serious and impressive, worthy successor to understated 2014 (5 stars, 97 pts).’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2018, 4.5* (93/100)
