About the SessionJust how well do modern-era South African wines perform as they get older ? One of the most important measures of great wine is that it should be age-worthy, that is it should become more pleasurable and more interesting to drink with time in the bottle.

About this Item
Salvioni is a leader in the cult Brunello genre, along with the likes of Soldera and Biondi-Santi. Based in Montalcino, Salvioni owns one of the commune’s best and most well-recognized crus – ‘La Cerbaiola’ – in the southeast of Brunello di Montalcino. While only a mere 4-hectare plot of old, low-yielding vines, Giulio Salvioni and his strict standards produce one of the region’s greatest, most sought-after wines from this site. The winemaking is kept traditional and simple. Known for their incredible purity, elegance and long-ageing structure, Salvioni’s small-batch wines are a true triumph for artisanal winemaking in the region.

Critics Ratings
'Maturing mid ruby with orange tinges. A little stalky/reductive with sour cherry and rose hip underneath. Gains in complexity with aeration. Complex, ripe cherry shot through by vibrant acidity. Plenty of tannins and depth. Gorgeous if embryonic and with plenty of potential.' – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (Jan 2018)
'Luminous full red. The Lively, perfumed nose combines red cherry, blueberry, minerals and flinty aromas. Rich and densely packed, showing captivating peppery lift to the very ripe and blue fruit flavors. It has continued to develop nicely and showcases the depth, solid structure and length to support a long, graceful evolution in bottle. Knockout Brunello from one of the quality leaders of Montalcino (and Italy, for that matter).' – Ian D’Agata, Vinous, 96/100 (Feb 2018)
'Delicate aromas of new leather, wild berry, chopped mint and a balsamic whiff of eucalyptus come together on this stunning wine. The palate is still youthfully restrained, but already offers juicy Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, star anise and a hint of truffle set against tightly wound, refined tannins. Bright acidity provides balance. It needs time to unwind and fully develop but promises to blossom into a stunner. Drink 2023–2038.' – Kerin O’Keefe, 97/100 (May 2018)
