About the SessionJust how well do modern-era South African wines perform as they get older ? One of the most important measures of great wine is that it should be age-worthy, that is it should become more pleasurable and more interesting to drink with time in the bottle.

About this Item
Born to a family of Bordeaux wine growers, at 23 years of age, in 1991, Thierry Germain left the Gironde to start his own domaine, Domaine des Roches Neuves, in the Loire valley. He believes the richness of the soil is key to the finesse of Saumur wines. Thierry Germain along with the Foucault brothers (Clos Rouegard) in Saumur Champigny and Nicolas Joly in Savenières have been three of the biggest drivers for quality Cabernet Franc and Chenin in the Loire. All being true believers in the merits of biodynamics.

Critics Ratings
'From 95 year old vines grown on silex soil. Creamy and rich on the nose, with really tart acid – very much the result of a cool vintage. Austere, hard and challenging – but cerebral and compelling too.' - Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Jun 2014)
'Bright yellow. Ripe aromas of vineyard peach, wild herbs and lemon zest. Full-bodied on the palate, with a leesy undercurrent to the mango and white pepper flavors. A lively acid structure carries the spicy fruit, and wet stone lingers on the finish. Inspired by the Rieslings of Austria, the Insolite (which means “out of the ordinary”) was created in 1996 from a massale selection of 95-year-old vines. I slightly prefer the 2013 to the 2012.' – Joel B. Payne, Vinous, 90/100 (Dec 2014)
'Unapologetically natural in philosophy, Thierry Germain conjures esoteric and uncompromising Chenins. Some can be challengingly hard and austere, but with that comes a quality of flavour that is utterly compelling.' - JancisRobinson.com
