About the SessionJust how well do modern-era South African wines perform as they get older ? One of the most important measures of great wine is that it should be age-worthy, that is it should become more pleasurable and more interesting to drink with time in the bottle.

Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by the Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves and is widely considered as Spain’s leading wine producer! The Alvarez family took over in 1982 providing more consistent quality in their wines over the years. They produce three wines Unico, Valbuena 5° and Vega Sicilia Unico Reserva Especial from their 210 hectares of vines. Their estate in Ribera del Duero is known for its dense, complex red wines made principally from the Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) grape variety and produces, Unico, is one of Spain's most expensive and sought-after wines.

Critics Ratings
'It might be a lighter vintage for Alión, but one that has a subtler profile and harmony. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, with a thread of acidity going through its core and lifting it up. An elegant Alión.' - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, 94/100 (Feb 2017)
'Brilliant ruby. Cherry, red currant and pungent flowers on the spice- and mineral-accented nose. Chewy and focused on the palate, offering concentrated bitter cherry, dark chocolate and succulent herb flavors that are slow to unfurl. Shows very good energy and nervy cut on the persistent finish, which features a suggestion of cherry pit and gently firming tannins.' - Josh Raynolds, Vinous,91/100 (Nov 2020)
'Firm and dense, this seems a bit tough at first but blooms with air, offering black fruit, coffee and tar flavors, and finishing with anise and floral notes, bright acidity balancing the muscular tannins. Drink now through 2025.' - Thomas Matthews, Wine Spectator, 91/100 (Jun 2017)
'Blackish crimson with an inky core. The fruit smells riper than the Pintia, more fruit cake but still dark and savoury at the same time. Complex aroma: baking spice and a touch earthy. Still really scented, opening to a light floral note, too. Firm, velvety texture but tastes cooler and less thick on the palate than the Pintia. Even with this ripeness there is a fine complexity on the nose. Sweet black fruit and a light spice on the finish.' - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17+/20 (Dec 2016)
