About the SessionJust how well do modern-era South African wines perform as they get older ? One of the most important measures of great wine is that it should be age-worthy, that is it should become more pleasurable and more interesting to drink with time in the bottle.

About this Item
With a rich history that dates back to 1692, Hartenberg has passed through the legendary families of Finlayson and Gilbey until the late Ken Mackenzie purchased the estate in 1987. Situated in its own self-contained valley on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, the terroir is renowned for fine quality and ageability. CWG member Carl Schultz has presided as the head winemaker for over 25 years and has produced world class, powerful reds.
The 170-hectare property has a pure water source running through it, and a number of birds and animals which call Hartenberg their home. As such, the owners and staff have accepted responsibility for the conservation of the property through considered and sustainable use of all natural resources. They have various initiatives in place to ensure an environment where nature thrives.

Critics Ratings
'Plush black cherry, crème de cassis and strong violet-scented bouquet that is heady and yet still very delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe black cherry and blueberry fruit, very fine tannin, cashmere in texture but with the structure on the finish to suggest that long-term aging will be required. Excellent.' – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Nov 2015)
'Decadent notes of fresh caramel, plum sauce and raspberry coulis lend richness to the nose of this seductive Shiraz. Additional notes of black cherry and blackberry are laced by forward notes of toasted oak, sweet spice, black pepper and fennel. The palate is plush and full, with a texture like crushed velvet and spicy notes of mocha, sweet smoke and pepper that hold on tightly through the finish. Drink 2017–2022.' – Lauren Buzzeo, Wine Enthusiast, 92/100 (Oct 2015)
'Bright, deep ruby-red. Deep aromas of cassis, black cherry and peppery spices. Seriously rich, dense and sweet; a chewy Shiraz with lively peppery lift to its dark fruit flavors. Sound acidity gives shape and lift to finish. Dense yet light on its feet, with solid dusty tannins to support ageing.' – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 91/100 (Sep 2015)
