About the SessionJust how well do modern-era South African wines perform as they get older ? One of the most important measures of great wine is that it should be age-worthy, that is it should become more pleasurable and more interesting to drink with time in the bottle.

About this Item
Often described as the South African equivalent of a Grand Cru or First Growth, Kanonkop Estate is situated on the Simonsberg mountain slopes on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. Owned by the fourth generation Krige family, Abri Beeslaar is their long-term winemaker who has won International Winemaker of the year an incredible 3 times.
The Black Label was introduced as a limited-edition bottling with the 2006 vintage, cementing the team’s confidence in South Africa’s own red variety. Black Label is made from one of the oldest Pinotage vineyards in South Africa, one planted in 1953 on a site that has over the years proved to produce fruit of specific excellence and deemed special enough to be bottled under an own label.

Critics Ratings
‘There are only 3,500 bottles of this incredible wine, produced from a three-hectare block of 62-year-old Pinotage, so it will be in demand, even at what is a high price for South Africa. Dense, complex and concentrated, it’s a wine that supersedes its grape variety’s limitations: plush, aromatic and sweet, with black and red fruits in delicous harmony, carrying its 100% new oak with style. Simply brlliant. Drink: 2016-30.’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2015, 97/100
‘2013 celebrates vineyard’s 60th anniversary in fine fashion. Serene in its concentration, with fine line of energy lifting ripe, dark fruits, viscosity. All in place, including new French oak, for lengthy ageing. As grand as 2012 (5 stars, 95 pts).’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide, 4.5* (2016)
‘Pinotage's Pinot Noir parentage makes itself felt in this elegant wine. Aromas of red cherry, dusky rose, incense and smoky, earthy minerals continue on the lithe, vibrant palate which is lifted by brisk, flowing acidity. Flavours are denser and darker than the nose, showing more purple and black berries and tarry hints, and are supported by soft, powdery tannins. Deliciously understated.’ – Tina Gellie, Decanter, 95/100 (May 2022)
'Bright, full ruby. Brambly dark berries and fynbos aromas are complemented by funkier earth and tar tones on the nose and palate; conveys a very strong impression of terroir. Wonderfully tactile, dense and sweet, showing a creamy, old-viney richness of texture. Highly concentrated essence of Pinotage with chewy, ripe suave tannins and palate-staining notes of dark berries and bitter chocolate. Really spreads out to saturate the mouth and builds inexorably on the back end, showing a lovely subtle sweetness. One of the longest South African wines I tasted this spring, this wine really transcends it variety.' – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 94/100 (Apr 2015)
