About the SessionJust how well do modern-era South African wines perform as they get older ? One of the most important measures of great wine is that it should be age-worthy, that is it should become more pleasurable and more interesting to drink with time in the bottle.

'Pinotage "started as a challenge" at Spioenkop and has turned into something of a triumph. Made with whole bunches, like a Pinot Noir, this is a complex, cool climate style with pure red fruits, some old wood, fine tannins and refreshing acidity. Drink: 2015-20.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2015, 93/100
'Raw and meaty. Smoky. Wild cherries. Juniper. Spice souk and thoroughbred leather. Mane tossing, snorting, wild, muscles gathered tight with power, tight with control. Gamey. Almost northern Rhône-like. Majestic. The tannins are amazing - neither silk nor scrub. Like driftwood polished by a century of sea and wind. Cherry tobacco. There's a spirit here - quietly defiant, wild, majestic, walks its own path. Ink and smoked damsons. Adobe smoked chilli paste. This really is one of the most majestic, patrician Pinotages I have ever tasted. Very, very classy.' - Tamlyn Currin, JancisRobinson.com, 17,5/20 (Jul 2021)
