About the SessionJust how well do modern-era South African wines perform as they get older ? One of the most important measures of great wine is that it should be age-worthy, that is it should become more pleasurable and more interesting to drink with time in the bottle.

About this Item
Spioenkop was established in 1998 and is located on a hill in Elgin deemed similar to the one in KwaZulu Natal where the battle of Spioenkop was fought during the Anglo Boer, with the 1900 range named after the year the battle took place. The estate is co-owned by Belgian former Sommelier and ex engineer, Koen Roose, fulfilling the roles of Viticulturist, Winemaker and General Manager. Known to do things differently, Koen is championing unique viticultural practices and varietals in Elgin. Koen traditionally exports most of his wines to his native Belgium. Spioenkop's recent Chenin Blanc’s have been world class.

'Pinotage “started as a challenge” at Spioenkop and has turned into something of a triumph. Made with whole bunches, like a Pinot Noir, this is a complex, cool climate style with pure red fruits, some old wood, fine tannins and refreshing acidity. Drink: 2015-20.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2015, 93/100
'Raw and meaty. Smoky. Wild cherries. Juniper. Spice souk and thoroughbred leather. Mane tossing, snorting, wild, muscles gathered tight with power, tight with control. Gamey. Almost northern Rhône-like. Majestic. The tannins are amazing – neither silk nor scrub. Like driftwood polished by a century of sea and wind. Cherry tobacco. There’s a spirit here – quietly defiant, wild, majestic, walks its own path. Ink and smoked damsons. Adobe smoked chilli paste. This really is one of the most majestic, patrician Pinotages I have ever tasted. Very, very classy.' – Tamlyn Currin, JancisRobinson.com, 17,5/20 (Jul 2021)
