About the Session

Just how well do modern-era South African wines perform as they get older ? One of the most important measures of great wine is that it should be age-worthy, that is it should become more pleasurable and more interesting to drink with time in the bottle.

About this Item

2013 Tinta Roriz
3 (1 x 3) 750ml

Situated on the banks of the River Douro, in northern Portugal, Quinta do Crasto has been owned by the de Almeida and today, the Roquette family, for over a century. The estate produces white and red Douro wines and premium Port wines, mostly from single vineyards or quintas. Their philosophy of grape growing is to respect the ecological heritage of the vineyards and preserve the biodiversity in the Douro Valley.

Critics Ratings

'Offers aromas and flavors redolent of red raspberry, with concentrated dark plum and blueberry notes. Presents supple tannins and a creamy, open-textured finish of dark chocolate and Asian spice. Very lush. Drink now through 2022.' – Kim Marcus, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Jun 2016)

'Tinta Roriz (aka Tempranillo) was once believed to be the finest grape for Douro table wines. While that view has been modified, it still makes an impressive wine. With 18 months in wood and super-ripe fruit, the wine is concentrated and opulent. It has fine tannins and acidity that are at the service of this great fruitiness. The wine will age further, with maturity likely to occur by 2020.' – Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, 94/100 (Jun 2016)

'Black core. Very firm tannins and thick, deep texture. Some red-fruit and vanilla sweetness on the nose. Spicy but lifted fruit. Dry, grippy tannins. A big wine but still has freshness. A really big dry beast and needs a lot of time. Takes a hold of your mouth and doesn’t let go. Dark savoury dry finish.' – Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17+/20 (May 2016)
