Notes
Judith Mason’s Eyes Right series (2009), lithographic prints with unique added drawings in pastel, pencil, colouring pencil and poker-work on paper, makes an anti-war statement, referencing military might in drab military hues. The works are variations on the theme of a soldier taking marching orders from a drill sergeant and feature three-dimensional-looking screaming mouths. They were exhibited in the Eleven Voices exhibition at the Deering Estates National Park, Miami, in 2016.
Referencing the eleven official languages of South Africa, Eleven Voices aimed to incite a conversation about cultural struggle, memory and identity among contemporary artists. Curators Kim Yantis, of the Deering Estate, and Rosie Gordon-Wallace, founder and curator of Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator, selected works by emerging and renowned South African artists, including Nicolas Hlobo, Anton Kannemeyer and Claudette Schreuders in addition to Judith Mason, that reflect thematic inspirations from South African art and culture.
Exhibited
Deering Estates National Park, Miami, Eleven Voices, 8 October to 26 November 2016.
