About this Item
Neil Ellis pioneered the négotiant, or non-estate, concept of sourcing grapes from growers all over the Cape and producing wine from the early 70s and, today, has become a pillar and legend of the local industry. Neil’s vision has always been to ‘make distinctive, refined wines that are expressive of their terrain and rank amongst South Africa’s finest’ and, with more than three decades of Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon production under his belt, there are not many who could do it any better.
Neil Ellis pioneered the négotiant, or non-estate, concept of sourcing grapes from growers all over the Cape as early as 1984, and today has become a pillar and legend of the local industry. Mindful that no single vineyard can satisfy the needs of all grape varieties, Neil Ellis set out to identify distinct terroir in which individual varieties will excel. Neil’s vision has always been to ‘make distinctive, refined wines that are expressive of their terrain and rank amongst South Africa’s finest’. The Terrain Specific range is an expression of this vision.
The mountain vineyards of the ward of Piekenierskloof, sourced from dry land bush vines, are known to produce the best Grenache expressions in the country. The vineyard that Neil sources from was planted in 1964 on their own roots, un-grafted and still completely disease-free.

Critics Ratings
'From a remarkable vineyard in the Citrusdal, on a mountain plateau north of Malmesbury famous for its rooibos tea. It’s a disease-free area and these vines are on their own roots (60 years old now). Sweet, vivid ripe berry fruits nose. The palate is focused and fresh with vivid cherry and raspberry fruit. Ripe and sweet but also fresh and spicy with a warm finish.' - Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak 2012, 92/100
'Red and black berries, earth, spice and attractive oak – subtle and complex. Concentrated fruit, fresh acidity and firm but fine tannins lending good shape and form. Still coming into its own.' - Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za 2014, 92/100
