Stellenbosch Farmer's Winery was the brainchild of William Charles Winshaw, an American medical doctor who came to South Africa in 1900 at the time of the Anglo Boer War. In 1925, SFW was created with Winshaw remaining as the MD of the organisation until 1962 when, at the age of 92, he retired. SFW, as the name implies, excelled at producing quality wines for the full spectrum of consumer needs. This company was also instrumental in the creation of a major new segment in our alcoholic beverage industry - ciders or alcoholic fruit beverages as we know them. One of the company's key strengths has always been innovation.
This wine has been checked and re-corked by Amorim cork under supervision of auction curator Higgo Jacobs, assuring provenance, quality and long life. Seal codes uY-200787, QH-430509 can be traced on Amorim Recorking Directory
One of the special wines that SFW launched in 1974 to celebrate the introduction of the Wine of Origin (WO) Scheme that was launched on 1 September 1973. It also played an important role to educate the public to understand wine of origin and its aspects. This wine was WO Paarl and although it was called Claret was made from 100% Cinsaut grapes. It spent a few months in the famous “stukvate” at the SFW cellars before being bottled and sold by the end of 1974.

'It has a brilliant pale red colour, very typical of older Cinsauts, and a soft onion skin colour. The freshness of the wine on the nose is very charming, followed by a sweetness that comes from the variety, and a gentle strawberry compote aroma. The palate is soft with some fruit lingering, smooth with a touch of the strawberry. The freshness is still apparent on the palate with a touch of juiciness and a clean aftertaste.
