About this Item
Notes
"I was teaching a course on Renaissance portraiture for the first time and the issues of identity, named and specific portraits, and also public/private identities, imagined and actual identities, and so on, were all in my mind. Of course, also the links to mortality, dust to dust, and the need to record, preserve and affirm life is all tied into the clay medium; the fragility of life, and the very different, more human connotations of frailty in the clay than in the illustrious medium of bronze or marble frequently used for sculpture in Western art."
