Notes
"The Mountebank (of which Dorothy thought highly) is of the old Grand Theatre in Main Street [Port Elizabeth], with a crowd surrounding a ventriloquist and doll. The lights of the theatre stream across the foreground road; the interior lights of the balcony (where pre-ordered sit-down teas were ready in advance to be served by waitresses during the interval between films) create a pattern of window-panes and balustrades. We children watched and listened to the ventriloquist while Dorothy made her sketches."
