About this Item

1998 Colonnello Barolo
4 (1 x 4) 750ml

Poderi Aldo Conterno is a Piedmont producer known for its wines from the best parcels of the Bussia vineyard in Monforte d'Alba. Aldo Conterno, who died in 2012, was regarded by many as the greatest of all Barolo winemakers. The business was founded in 1969 when Aldo bought the Favot estate with its Bussia holdings. For the previous eight years, he had managed Giacomo Conterno with his brother, but left to make wines in a less resolutely traditionalist environment. The estate is now run by his three sons.

Critics Ratings

'Loads of ripe plum character that verges on prune. Full and rich, with soft tannins and very ripe fruit. Long and velvety. Slightly raisiny character.' - Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Dec 2008)

‘Textured, powerful, and concentrated is the 1998 Barolo Colonnello. Offering aromas and flavors of roasted coffee, new saddle leather, black cherry jam, underbrush, earth, and spice box, this tightly-structured, full-bodied, dense, impressively-extracted wine needs cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020.’ - Robert Parker Jr, Wine Advocate, 90-92/100 (Oct 2001)
