About this Item

2008 Barolo
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Bartolo Mascarello (officially known as Cantina Mascarello Bartolo) is a revered wine producer based in the town of Barolo in Piedmont, Italy. The estate was founded in 1918 and brought to prominence by the eponymous Bartolo Mascarello, who died in 2005. It is now run by his daughter Maria-Teresa Mascarello. The estate is particularly known for its traditionally-made Barolo wines. Indeed, much of Bartolo Mascarello's enduring reputation outside of his wines was forged around his staunch resistance to the so-called "modernisation" of winemaking in the Barolo region. At a time when many fashionable estates were turning to small, French oak barriques and shorter maceration times, Mascarello retained 30 to 50-day maceration and the traditional large-format Slavonian oak tuns, or "botti". Mascarello wines continue to be considered among Barolo's greatest, and fetch some of the highest prices in the appellation.

Critics Ratings

‘Mascarello’s 2008 Barolo is a wine of extraordinary elegance. A sweet, open bouquet leads to dark red fruit, mint, spices and licorice in this pretty, nuanced Barolo. The 2008 is all about detail and understated finesse. It boasts breathtaking purity in its fruit and fabulous overall balance. A textured, finely-knit finish leaves a lasting impression. The 2008 is very classic in style. It will require considerable patience, despite its deceptively medium-bodied structure. This is another dazzling wine from Maria-Theresa Mascarello. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038.’ – Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, 96+/100 (Apr 2012)

'Barolo and La Morra. Mid crimson just beginning to lighten up on the rim. Very slow to emerge sweet fruit. Extracted and concentrated palate wrapping up quite bold tannin. Rich style but totally convincing.' - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Jun 2012)

‘There's a dark element to this intense, juicy red, offering black currant and blackberry notes, with a violet accent. Harmonious and supple, revealing refined tannins and a long, fruit-filled finish. Best from 2015 through 2028.’ – Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Dec 2013)
