About this Item
The Domenico Clerico estate, located in Monforte d’Alba – the heart of Barolo, started producing wines in 1976 when Domenico took over his father’s vineyard. Domenico, who passed away in 2017, was a pioneer of producing single cru wines in Barolo. He sought out the best plots in the region and grew his vineyards from the small 4-hectare estate he inherited from his father. He was considered a modernist and brought new enthusiasm to Barolo wines.
The lot consist of 2 bottles of each:

Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra 2001
'Clerico’s 2001 Ciabot Mentin Ginestra was one of the first Barolos that really captivated my attention and for me it remains this producer’s most representative wine. It is a superb achievement and one of the highlights of the vintage.’ – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 95/100 (Oct 2006)
‘Aromas of blackberries and licorice with hints of oak. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and lots of ripe fruit as well as smoky oak. A rich and very long wine. A massive beauty. Best after 2008.’ – Wine Spectator, 96/100 (Oct 2005)
Domenico Clerico Barolo Pajana 2001
‘Blackberry, spice and chocolate aromas and flavors follow through to a full-bodied palate, with chewy tannins and a long, long finish. Big. I like this better than 2000 for this vineyard. Solid as a rock. Best after 2009.’ – Wine Spectator, 95/100 (Oct 2005)
‘The 2001 Barolo Pajana offers up freshly cut flowers, espresso, mint, leather, exotic spices and plums. The fruit still shows plenty of intensity and the tannins have softened, yet the Pajana remains a bit of a brute. There is enough fruit for the 2001 to drink well for another decade or so, but I don’t see this ever being a truly elegant Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021.’ – Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Apr 2012)
‘This strong series continues with the 2001 Barolo Pajana. It too is a deeply-colored effort, with notes of violets, minerals and tar that appear out of the glass. The lower altitude of the vineyard gives a wine that is perhaps a touch less complex aromatically but that is quite rich, round and soft on the palate with generous amounts of very ripe black fruit, chocolate and toasted oak flavors supported by notable structure and finishing with excellent length.’ – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 96/100 (Oct 2006)
