About this Item
The late Gianfranco Soldera was undoubtably Montalcino’s most celebrated wine producer. Originally from Treviso, Gianfranco came to Tuscany in the ‘70s with his wife Graziella to obtain the best vineyards. He settled on the 23-hectare estate of Case Basse, 320 metres above sea level, with a perfect south-western exposure. Devoted to the traditional methods of farming and winemaking, Gianfranco was relentless in his constant pursuit of improvement, perfection and innovation and was also a revered pioneer of organic viticulture in the region. Known for their remarkable complexity, elegance, natural finesse and ability to age for decades, the legendary wines of Case Basse are the standard-bearers for organic, sustainable wine production.

Critics Ratings
‘Savoury nose and generally more earthbound than the 2009 Case Basse. Quite rich and sweet with lightly gamey notes though overall jewelly in composition. Dense and spicy with a good mineral-scented backbone. It opened up in the glass to a sweeter wine than most in this vertical. Great balance and some concentration.’ - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18.5/20 (Nov 2016)
‘The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva emerges from the glass with soft red cherries, licorice, tobacco and sweet herbs. It is a pretty wine with gorgeous inner perfume and fine overall balance, but I don't see much of the trademark Soldera structure. Take it from someone who has had the privilege of tasting virtually every wine that has ever been made here, the 2005 - while good - is miles away from Soldera's recent masterpieces. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.’ – Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Apr 2012)
