About this Item

1999 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
2 (1 x 2) 750ml

The late Gianfranco Soldera was undoubtably Montalcino’s most celebrated wine producer. Originally from Treviso, Gianfranco came to Tuscany in the ‘70s with his wife Graziella to obtain the best vineyards. He settled on the 23-hectare estate of Case Basse, 320 metres above sea level, with a perfect south-western exposure. Devoted to the traditional methods of farming and winemaking, Gianfranco was relentless in his constant pursuit of improvement, perfection and innovation and was also a revered pioneer of organic viticulture in the region. Known for their remarkable complexity, elegance, natural finesse and ability to age for decades, the legendary wines of Case Basse are the standard-bearers for organic, sustainable wine production.

Critics Ratings

‘Dark blackish ruby. Positively burgundian nose with a chestnut note and a very powerful, high-toned palate with, still, great concentration (but this was a powerful vintage in general in Montalcino). Big-boned, dense with a dry finish. Bigger than most wines from this stable, so may please some palates more’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (May 2022)

‘The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is an unquestionable success. It displays heady, complex aromas of smoke, tar and scorched earth, along with plenty of sweet dark fruit and tobacco flavors, in a potent, brooding style showing a rich inner tension between its fruit and the structure of the vintage. It should drink well to age twenty-five. Even though it carries an exorbitant price tag, the Riserva is well worth the extra dollars in vintage 1999. A great effort. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2024.’ – Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, 95/100 (Dec 2006)

‘Aromas of cherries, dried flowers and dried tobacco. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins. Beautiful layers of silky tannins and a fine finish in the end. Needs time. Burgundian in style. The price is still hard to swallow, considering the quality. Best after 2006.’ – Wine Spectator, 91/100 (Oct 2005)
