About this Item

1986 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
1 (1 x 1) 1500ml

The late Gianfranco Soldera was undoubtably Montalcino’s most celebrated wine producer. Originally from Treviso, Gianfranco came to Tuscany in the ‘70s with his wife Graziella to obtain the best vineyards. He settled on the 23-hectare estate of Case Basse, 320 metres above sea level, with a perfect south-western exposure. Devoted to the traditional methods of farming and winemaking, Gianfranco was relentless in his constant pursuit of improvement, perfection and innovation and was also a revered pioneer of organic viticulture in the region. Known for their remarkable complexity, elegance, natural finesse and ability to age for decades, the legendary wines of Case Basse are the standard-bearers for organic, sustainable wine production.

Provenance

The Coats Family Cellar is arguably the most prestigious fine wine collection ever offered in South Africa. It contains a deep collection of the worlds finest, most sought-after wines, spanning over 150 years. Collected over many decades, the cellar was imported from Ireland to South Africa via reefer. Each bottle within the Coats Family Cellar was authenticated by Michael Egan in August 2022 and given an ID number for tracking.

Michael Egan is a world-expert in fine and rare wines with more than thirty five years of experience. He was the principal expert for the plaintiff in the two major wine counterfeiting trials in Koch v. Eric Greenberg and United States v. Rudy Kurniawan, both of which occurred in 2013.

Along with Michael Egan, the Strauss & Co Fine Wine team have tasted extensively through the cellar and are confident of the wine storage and hence quality. The entire collection is currently stored at Wine Cellar.

Critics Ratings

‘The 1986 Brunello di Montalcino is another wine that is giving all it’s got tody. Brighter and lighter in structure than most Soldera Brunellos, the 1986 presents a distinctly lifted expression of Sangiovese, with plenty of red cherry, cranberry, mint, and white pepper flavors. The wine’s mid-weight structure makes it an excellent choice for drinking over the next handful of years.’ – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 93/100 (Oct 2016)

‘Made in an elegant style, this precocious Brunello already provides delicious drinking. The color is dark ruby and the nose offers up classy aromas of sweet curranty fruit and spices. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with surprisingly soft tannins, a sure-handed sense of elegance and style, and a long, rich, extremely well-balanced finish. I suspect this wine should continue to drink well for at least a decade. An impressive wine, this Brunello is not burdened down by excessive earthiness or astringent tannins.’ – Robert Parker Jr, Wine Advocate, 89/100 (Aug 1992)
