About this Item

2013 Treinspoor
3 (1 x 3) 750ml

Eben Sadie is South Africa’s most revered winemaker and he arguably kick-started the local fine wine revolution. Over two decades his pursuit for quality in the Swartland has been unparalleled in South Africa and he was voted Winemaker of the Year in 2017 by the International Master of Wine Institute. Eben’s wines were influenced by the Rhône and Spain, with traditional local varieties sourced from pockets of old bush vines and unique terroirs. Long-ageing Columella is often regarded as South Africa’s best red, while Palladius similarly offers an incredible Swartland expression and decades of longevity. The old vine single vineyard series, which was first released in the 2009 vintage, is now firmly the most sought-after release of the year. Mev Kirsten is South Africa’s rarest white wine, produced from a century old Stellenbosch vineyard, while the now legendary Skurfberg received 100 points from Tim Atkin in 2020.

The Treinspoor is part of the Sadie Family Old Vine Series, South Africa’s most sought-after modern wines. From 40+ year old vines, this 100% Tinta Barocca is named after the railway line that runs alongside the vineyard. The Trienspoor can be considered his longest-ageing red wine.

Critics Ratings

The 2013 Old Vine Series Treinspoor comes from Tinta Barocca planted in 1974. It has a deep lucid purple/cherry color. The nose is very harmonious with raspberry, redcurrant, wilted rose-petals scents and a touch of quince that gently unfolds but remains demure. The palate is very harmonious with slightly chewy tannins, nigh perfect acidity and wonderful definition and minerality toward the finish that has more backbone that I anticipated. Excellent.’ Neal Martin 93/100,  Wine Advocate (2014)

With already 4 years age, the colour remains a vibrant bright cherry red with a black plum core. The nose is also still very youthful showing a pronounced cherry sherbet bon bon zesty lift, freshly crushed red currants, fragrant rose petals, strawberry shortbread, and pretty parma violets. There is such wonderful, profound aromatic complexity that has developed in bottle since I first tasted this wine on release in 2014. The palate reveals an incredibly sleek fleshy balance, showing textured layers of mulberry and raspberry fruits, powdery slatey mineral tannins in perfect harmony and fine acids with great definition. After a little more time in the glass, darker, spicy sappy hedgerow notes develop adding to this beautiful wine’s complexity. Incredibly pure in character, this 13 Abv wine is a very special expression of the Swartland.’ Greg Sherwood MW 94+/100 (2017)
