About this Item
The Iconic Helderberg property has title deeds back to 1693. Hennie and son Manie Malan recognized the property’s unique terroir for crafting full-bodied red wines early on, but it was Piet du Toit in 1959 that put Alto on top. Heritage and tradition married with evolution and innovation are the hallmarks of this estate situated in the golden triangle of Stellenbosch. Only five winemakers have crafted wines at Alto over eight decades.
The 1985 Rouge was legendary Gerhard 'Hempies' du Toit's third vintage, after taking over the reins from his father in the newly built estate cellar. Few wineries can lay claim to levels of trust in quality and ageability as Alto reds.

Critics Ratings
'Change in blend, now Cabernet Sauvignon, Franc and Merlot with some Shiraz. Slightly lighter style than unblended Cabernet Sauvignon. Some sweetish hints of mulberries on palate, with attractive cedary introduction in the bouquet. Formerly blend of Cabernet with Shiraz and some Tinta Barocca.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 1989
