About this Item

1984 Cabernet Sauvignon
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Meerlust Estate, owned by the Myburgh family, has been in the family for eight generations. Located 5km from False Bay, the property was given the name 'Meerlust' from the original owner, which means 'pleasure of the sea'. The Meerlust name is synonymous with tradition, elegance and longevity. In fact, it was their Cabernet Sauvignon, produced since 1975, that was the first to carry the Meerlust label.

Having previously worked at Chateau Lafite, the classic 1984 was one of Nico’s final vintages before son Hannes took over the family estate. It shows remarkable energy and vinosity at 35 years and remains one of the finest Cabernet Sauvignons of the era.

Critics Ratings

All vintages from maiden 1975 through to 1984 have been awarded Superior ratings. In lighter-to-medium bodied style, with delicacy and complexity of first-rate cabernet; but not in the dense, blackcurrants and billowing vanilla vogue of some New World cabernets. Patterns are now plainer … The 1984 is also exceptional, with multitude of rich flavours and ample, firm tannins for keeping … On present tasting, order of preference would be: ’80, ’84, ’81, ’82, ’75, ’83, ’78, ’76..’ Platter’s SA Wine Guide (1989)
