About this Item

2013 The 1947 Chenin Blanc
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Kaapzicht is a 4th generation family-owned wine estate, located in Stellenbosch. The name Kaapzicht means ‘Cape view’ and is attributed to the beautiful views of Table Mountain and Cape Town which are seen from the farm. The Steytler family has farmed the land since 1946 and today, brothers Danie and George own the 190-hectare estate. Located on the Bottelary hill, the farm experiences a mild climate with cool sea breezes and consists of old, weathered granite soils.

Danie Steytler Jnr took over the reins from father Danie in 2009, and with the emphatic introduction of this single vineyard Chenin in 2013, earning a Platter 5* on release, cemented his intentions to build on the family brand and grow the quality offering. Named 1947 after the planting date of the vineyard (planted by Danie’s great grandfather), thought to be SA’s 2nd oldest block of Chenin, the wine was introduced to mark 30 years of bottling under the Kaapzicht label. The maiden 2013 is very hard to find in the market today as it’s produced in minute quantities from this low yielding vineyard (70 cases made).

Critics Ratings

[NEW] Date estate’s bushvines planted, SA’s 2nd oldest chenin block. 13 bunch-pressed, natural barrel ferment, matured year, 50% new. Melon & kumquat preserve, lovely crushed almond flavours, sleekly curvaceous, ultra-long finish.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2015, 5*

‘… the kind of wine that stops you in your tracks. It’s a hugely complex yet entirely drinkable affair. Lime, white peach, yellow apple, earth, some yeasty complexity. Weightless intensity and all of a piece. Oxidative in style but perfectly done – the resulting vague sherry-like quality suits the wine. In a word, haunting.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag 2014, 94/100

Lush, with gorgeous heather, brioche, peach, apricot and yellow apple notes all melded together and flowing through the broad but defined finish, where a lovely hint of verbena chimes in. Drink now through 2017. 70 cases made.’ – Wine Spectator (Tasted 2014), 92/100
