Located behind the old fishing village of Hermanus, is one of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa, Hamilton Russell. The estate was purchased in 1975 by Tim Hamilton Russell and in 1991 his son, Anthony Hamilton Russell, took over and immediately narrowed their range down to only Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This proved to be a masterstroke and made the Hemel-en-Aarde valley notorious for producing the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in South Africa and a recognised expression outside of Burgundy.

The brilliant 2003 Pinot was one of only 17 wines to be awarded a Platter’s 5* award that year as well as winning the, ‘Regional Pinot Noir Trophy Over £10 at the Decanter World Wine Awards’.
‘03 (5*) similar to 97 as a vintage, but with longest ever hangtime. Full, well defined & better focused than pvs. Classy mineral tone; obvious wood, but integrated; excellent structure & balance. ‘Moderately saturated medium red. Burgundian aromas of black cherry, pepper, tar, minerals and fresh herbs. Very suave on entry, then complex and lively in the middle palate, with ineffable flavors of berries, spices, cocoa powder, minerals and earthy underbrush. Dense and lively, without an ounce of extra fat. Builds impressively toward the end, finishing with very sweet, refined tannins.
