Boekenhoutskloof, located in the Franschhoek valley, was established in 1776 and gets its name 'Boekenhout' from an indigenous Beech tree. Boekenhoutskloof, managed by Marc Kent, describes themself as a Syrah specialist. Their efforts in conservation can be seen through initiatives they have taken-on in their farm and surrounding areas. They are also a founding member of the Franschhoek Mountain Conservancy.
2001 was the fifth vintage from the famous Wellington vineyard and rated 5 stars in Platter. Considered a great vintage due to moderate weather in February, the top wines have aged with considerable grace. Just 1 000 cases were produced.

'A tertiary note reminiscent of marmite on the nose which belied how youthful and intact the palate would be – concentrated red fruit, spice, bright acidity, fine tannins. Great substance and intensity (underscored by an abv of 15%) but perfectly in balance. Perfection should, by definition, be rare.’ – Christian Eedes, WineMag (2012), 18/20.
‘Very dark, with plum and blackberry fruit covered with smoky bacon, loam and coffee notes. Nice game, lavender, sanguine and mineral notes peek in on the muscular finish.’ – Wine Spectator, 92/100.
