About this Item
With a history dating back over 300 years, Vergelegen has kept a simple winemaking philosophy this entire time, ‘there must be harmony between the old and the new’. Having produced fine, modern wines for two decades, Vergelegen is one of South Africa’s highest regarded, established producers. Situated on the Schaapenberg in Somerset West, overlooking False Bay. The 3,000 hectare estate is situated in one of the richest floral regions of the world and they practice sustainable farming and have various environmental projects.
This Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon blend (67/33) comes from Schaapenberg’s south-west and the south-facing Korhaan vineyards and it earned a Gold Medal with scores of 94 and 95 from the 07 and 08 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show’s respectively. It was also the 2007 Platter’s Guide White Wine of the Year and Vergelegen was selected as the New-York based Wine Enthusiast’s 2005 New World Winery of the Year.

Critics Ratings
‘Much-praised blend, with proven possibilities for maturing well over 5+ yrs. 05, our Wine of the Year this ed, youthfully tight, quiet, but great, elegant intensity, & long finish recalling lemon & tropical aspects – ripe sauvignon prominent mid-2006, though only 33% (20% in 04 SAA, Decanter 4*). Impressive already in its austere, subtly oaked opulence, promising harmonious development. Both varieties bunch-pressed, fermented /10 months in barrels, half new. 01 Best Museum Class White Blend at 2006 TWS.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2007, 5*
‘Very spicy, gravelly aromas of orange, peach and flinty minerals. Silky and glyceral in the mouth, offering a compelling spicy sweetness of orange, lemon and peach fruit, with more tropical notes lurking. This has a thickness of texture and a tactile, dusty finish rare for a dry white wine from South Africa. Sexy already but structured to age. A knockout!’ – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous.com 94/100 (2007)
