Critics Ratings

Kanonkop Paul Sauer 1991

Winner of the La Revue du vin de France trophy, this 1991 flagship red utilised favourable conditions in an "above average" vintage for Stellenbosch to produce a fine, structured and complex red that has aged remarkably well.

Kanonkop Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

More conservatively styled than siblings perhaps, now from 30+ yr old vines. 01’s spicy, tobacco, berry bouquet/palate cooperate with firm ripe tannins to offer youthfully fine, sternly elegant profile. 14% alc; 2 yrs Fr oak, half new. Needs & deserves good few years to give of its best.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2005, 4*

Vergelegen V 2003

'More impressive, enormous & dramatic than lovely in its tight-sprung youth: need yrs still for the concentrated sweet fruit to come out of its sombrely tannic, oak-dominated shell – but already vibrant, deep & long. Elegance is quite beside the point here … ’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2006, 4.5*

Boekenhoutskloof Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Classic in style & age-worthiness. Superb 2004 (5*) echoes with claret-like minerality; fresh, intense fruit, fragrance & spice from complementary new Fr oak (27 months). Sophisticated focus, tension; only in youth are brooding tannins curtailing sweet-fruited richness. Single hillside Franschhoek vineyard. Unfiltered.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2007 - 5*
