About this Item

1998 Baron Edmund
1 (1 x 1) 1500ml

Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons was established in 1997 under the leadership of Dr. Anton Rupert and Baron Edmond de Rothschild. The men later handed over the reins to their respective sons: Anthonij Rupert and Baron Benjamin de Rothschild. Few SA wine brands have been able to penetrate the premium global market quite like R&R with their distinctive Bordeaux-style blends from the Cape.

Critics Ratings

‘Further wood maturation (for total 24 months in 100% new French oak) and softening in bottle have added extra nuances - and star wattage - to this long-nurtured, prestige Claret. Maiden 1998 - eventually available to an expectant market from October 2000 - announces itself with dramatic inky colour, waves of blackcurrant/forest fruit aromas woven with aromatic cedarwood, and Bordeaux-like hint of tar. Restrained ripe fruit flavours with tobacco leaf complexity, fine Merlot mineral thread. Firm dry tannins, persistent finish hint at long-term ageing potential. 60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes selected in prime vineyards, blended during vinification.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2001, 4.5*
