In 1925 Pierneef together with his wife toured Europe for nine months. They left Europe on a freighter on the 12th January 1926 sailing via Port Said down the east coast.
"They were the only two passengers on board and, since the ship had to spend from between two and six days at every port, Pierneef was often able to go out and paint the countryside to his heart's content" P.G. Nel (editor) J.H Pierneef His Life and His Work, Cape Town, 1990, page 67.
