About this Item
In the 19th Century, Canon La Gaffelière began as two separate estates, Canon Boitard and La Gaffeliere Boitard. They were eventually joined and bought by the Von Neipperg family in 1971. The château is located in the heart of the Saint-Émilion appellation and consists of 19.5 hectares planted with 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards lie at the base of the ‘côtes’, on a mix of clay-limestone and clay-sand soils, with predominantly sandy topsoils. At harvest, the grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed. Vinification is kept traditional at Canon-la-Gaffelière with up to 4 weeks in wooden vats followed by up to 18 months in oak barrels (50% new). In 2012, the château was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé status.

Critics Ratings
‘Lovely ruby hue to this, with a juicy, dark, very polished, svelte fruit quality. Tight kirsch-like aromas, very pure and deep. More of that svelte, blue/black fruit character on the palate with lots of structure and power. This seems like a real baby, but with obvious potential. Very good indeed/excellent.’ - Tom Cannavan, wine-pages.com, 92/100 (Jan 2003)
‘Some brightness in the ruby. Quite a youthful, 'pointed', sharp nose without much development yet. Rich and sweet and with more than a hint of dark chocolate, this leaps up and down for attention. The acid and tannin are still a little jagged, in modern idiom. Very savoury finish. Firm and still on the way up.’ - Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Mar 2010)
