About this Item

1999 Saint-Emilion
8 (1 x 8) 750ml

This Saint-Émilion property is particularly known for its lush, ripe, modern-style of wines. Since 2006, Château Monbousquet has been ranked as a Grand Cru Classé and produces one of the best wines in the region. The property owns 32 hectares of vines with all, save for a small parcel, planted to red varieties (60% Merlot, 30% percent Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon). The soils are mostly gravelly, which suits the high proportion of Cabernets. The grand vin and second wine are both fermented in stainless steel vats. The grand vin sees 18-24 months in new barriques and is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Monbousquet also produces a Bordeaux Blanc from its small parcel of Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, Sémillon and Muscadelle, which remains very rare within the appellation.

Critics Ratings

‘The dense ruby/purple-colored 1999 Monbousquet exhibits a port-like bouquet of super-ripe black cherry and black currant fruit intermixed with scents of coffee, tobacco, and vanilla. Tipping the scales at a whopping 14% alcohol (extremely high for Bordeaux), this wine, which spends 18 months in 100% new oak and is bottled unfined and unfiltered, is a blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. It was cropped at an amazingly low 30 hectoliters per hectare. It possesses an amazing texture, a mid-palate that you could get lost in, and a sensational 40-45 second finish.’ - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 94/100 (Apr 2002)

‘Delivers loads of smoky wood on the nose, with sweet pipe tobacco and dried dark fruits. Full-bodied, offering big, velvety tannins, and a long, long finish. This is a blockbuster for the vintage. Really impressive. Best after 2011. 10,000 cases made.’ - James Suckling, Wine Spectator, 91/100 (2010)
