About this Item

2000 Gewurztraminer Vendages Tardives Altenbourg
10 (1 x 10) 375ml

Run by two brothers, Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé, this well-respected domaine is located in Wettolsheim, in the heart of Alsace. Maurice, who is married to the granddaughter of the late Albert Mann, took over in 1984. The domaine is small with 19 hectares of vineyards in total, but five of their hectares are in five different Alsatian Grands Crus vineyards and a further two hectares are in lieux-dits. The Barthelmé brothers have ‘taken a quality-minded approach,’ says Jamie Goode, ‘and say all the right things about respect for the soil and the importance of low yields.’ In 1997, the estate switched to biodynamics.

Critics Ratings

‘Brooding, very rich aromas of smoke, lichee, minerals and saffron. Very ripe and fat, even liqueur-like, but nicely framed by solid acidity. Strong spice and candied fruit flavors. Perhaps best today on the very long back end. This is still an infant; it is stuffed with fruit but hasn't yet harmonized, with the result that it comes across as heavier than the Furstentum despite possessing significantly higher acidity.’ - Steven Tanzer, Vinous, 90-93/100 (Jul 2001)
