Notes
Marion Boehm’s work gained instant international recognition when she started exhibiting her largescale collages of African women. She initially worked as an interior designer, and it is her sense of exploring space and texture that enabled her to create her fascinating collages with intricate pieces of textile and other found materials. She discovered many pieces at a recycling depot in Soweto, and began working with a local group of women weavers at a community project in Kliptown. What is very striking, however, is her inclusion of black and white photographic portraits in her collages. Boehm is fascinated by multicultural exchanges, and on a trip to Soweto she was introduced by Kay Hassan to one of the famous township photographers, David ‘Bolo’ Meyer. He shared his many discarded and uncollected images with her. Boehm transforms all these raw materials into aesthetically pleasing works with great socio-economic and cultural significance.
